9/11 Disaster

We are doing a topic on Natural Disasters and i have chosen to do the 9/11 disaster. The reason i chose this as my topic is because although this tragic event happened over 6 years ago i can still remember the news on t.v and in the papers. It still seems as if it was only yesterday. I wasn't even at school at that time and now i am in primary 7 but i can still recall the terrible pictures and news stories of the action as it happened aswell as the scenes afterwards. I am going to tell you what happened, show you some pictures and tell you how shocked the people were after that terrible day. I got all this imformation from articals from the internet. I hope that you enjoy my Disaster topic on 9/11.

To start off i will show you some pictures of the Twin Towers.

Before    and After  the disaster.

Now i will tell you what happened ( where do i start ).On september the 11th, 2001 in New York, the twin towers fell to the ground after two hijacked planes crashed into them. The terrorists crashed two airliners - one was American Airlines flight 11 which was deliberately flown into the North Tower (known as WTC1) and the other was United Airlines flight 175 which was later flown into the South Tower (known as WTC2.) A third plane was also hijacked and shortly after the collapse of the twin towers, American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia near Washinton D.C. A 4th hijacked plane  - American Airlines flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Penncylvania after the passenagers and crew tried to take control of the plane back.

Here are 5 more pictures of the Twin Towers.

                                                                                            -  over 6000 innocent people were injured ( 6,291 at final count )

                                                              -  19 terrorists died in this disaster

Days after the Sept. 11 attack, fires still burned at the site of the World Trade Center.

Survivors - The 9/11 commission stated that there were infact 16,000 people in the impact zone when the terrorist strikes happened. Most of these people survived because they were evacuated before the towers collapsed.

Peter Totten worked on the 91st floor of the South Tower. He helped to evacuate his office after seeing the first plane hit the North Tower. He took the lift down to the ground floor, he did not hear the message telling everyone to return to their desks. When he got outside he actually saw the second plane hit the South Tower. In an interview after the tragic events he told of how difficult it was for families of people who died to accept that he had survived.

Sonia Corredor age 30 was at her desk on the 91st floor when the plane hit the North Tower. She headed for the stair well and as she walked down she talked to people eating breakfast. She was on the 15th floor when the plane hit the South Tower. When out of the tower she got on the Staten island ferry. She was on the ferry when the South Tower collapsed.

Elia Zedona was on the 73rd floor of the North Tower. When she felt the impact of the explosion she headed straight for the stairs. She managed to get out of the North Tower just as the South Tower collapsed. The impact threw her to the ground and filled her throat with lumps of soot. She walked uptown unaware that both Towers had infact collapsed as she had never looked back.
